The Nikon D5300 is a great, budget-friendly introduction into the world of astrophotography, without needing a specialised, cooled camera from the get go. Whilst there are trade offs, you'll be pleasantly surprised with the output.

Pros
- + Whilst a lot of cameras have an articular screen, I think it's a must have for any camera, particularly in the astro domain
- + Wide compatibility of camera lenses (I use a wide field Samyang lens for my start trails)
- + The Sony made sensor handles low ISO well during long exposures, preventing noise, ideal for long star trail sessions
- + No low pass filter, which keeps stars and deep sky detail nice and sharp
Cons
- − The battery life isn't great, but you can buy a dummy battery kit and hook the camera up to a large capacity power bank for long star trail sessions
- − Whilst there's no low pass filter, there is a stock infrared filter, which blocks some of the red light from nebulae
- − The sensor is not cooled, which is fine for everyday photography, but introduces some thermal noise in the final image over stacked, long exposures
When I started shooting the night sky, I wanted to build a solid foundation of the photography side of the hobby first, dedicating my time to exploring star trails and optimising my settings and post processing. You can find some of my better shots on the Gallery section of this site. I upgraded to a Seestar to capture deeper space objects and was hooked by how much detail you could capture with such a small instrument. It inspired me to progress to a manual, dedicated rig, with a wide field refractor and tracking/guiding. You’ll need to get a T ring adapter to snap the camera onto your telescope to start shooting the night sky, but these are fairly inexpensive and simply click/screw in place.
Whilst the stock IR filter within the Nikon D5300 blocks out most of the red light, requiring longer integration time to pull this colour detail out, it’s quite interesting to see nebulae isolated to the blue end of the spectrum. You can get cameras astro-modified in the UK, there are some services advertised on eBay, and various threads that list these too, so worth doing some research. It’ll cost around £100+ GBP and this may vary by locality, so worth doing some research. I opted not to modify my own camera, since I have my ASI533MC Pro cooled camera and love shooting more terrestrial objects.
Overall, this is a fantastic first astro camera. The base model is more than sufficient, but it’s worth exploring the recommended accessories and 3D print models below to maximise your experience.

ZWO ASIAIR Shutter Release Cable (N3, Nikon)
Connects the D5300 to an ASIAIR so it can trigger the shutter directly — needed to run exposures longer than the camera's native 30-second limit from the ASIAIR app.
The D5300 uses the N3 (MC-DC2, 8-pin) connector — older/higher-end Nikon bodies (D300, D700, D800, D850, etc.) use the different N1 (MC-30) connector instead, so check which one your camera needs.
Select the N3 variant at checkout for the D5300.
Nikon UC-E6/UC-E16/UC-E17/UC-E23 USB Cable
